Sidney Bechet (1897-1959)Bechet's style of playing clarinet and soprano sax dominated many of the bands that he was in. He played lead parts that were usually reserved for trumpets and was a master of improvisation. Bechet summered many years in Juan-les-Pins on the French Riviera. A statue there, presented by the city of New Orleans, commemorates his life. |

American GIs went to France in World War 1 and brought the new music with them.
New French words appeared almost as rapidly: rag-time
became "le temps de chiffon", while "swinguer" and "le big band" entered French dictionaries.
Between the wars, more Americans followed with their jazz. During this time, the Riviera stopped being a sedate Winter resort and turned into a cool Summer resort. Many African-American jazz musicians came too because of the warm and friendly reception of the French people. Because the Riviera is an "outdoors" place, the "jazz festival" was born. In France, there are over 250 jazz festivals: most in July and August, and most in the French Riviera. Jazz-à-Juan at Juan-les-Pins is in a setting of 100-year-old pine trees and with the moonlit Mediterranean in the background. When this event began in 1963, the mayor was so astonished by the "hippie" audience, that he bussed them out of town; but they walked back. The Roman arena in Nice has been an "entertainment center" for 2,000 years, but never anythinbg as big as the 8-day jazz festival. About 50,000 people watch 75 concerts by 500 artists. Hyères celebrates the fact that the reeds produced from local canes – Rico - are prized by the world’s finest musicians. Therefore, it's festivcal is called "Festival de l’Anche" (reed) Here's a list of some of the jazz festivals on the French Riviera: Barcelonette Beaulieu La Ciotat Draguignan (in the "back country") Juan-les-Pins Menton Nice Porquerolles (It's on an island!) "a beautiful "perched village" near St Tropez St.-Raphaël La Seyne Toulon The best writer about Jazz on the Riviera is Ted Jones |

Casablanca is a 1942 film set during World War II in the Vichy-controlled
Moroccan city of Casablanca. The film was directed by Michael Curtiz,
and stars Humphrey Bogart as Rick and Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa. It focuses on
Rick's conflict between, in the words of one character, love and virtue: he
must choose between his love for Ilsa and his need to do the right thing by
helping her husband, Resistance hero Victor Laszlo, escape from Casablanca
and continue his fight against the Nazis.
The film was an immediate hit, and it has remained consistently popular ever since. Critics have praised the charismatic performances of Bogart and Bergman, the chemistry between the two leads, the depth of characterisation, the taut direction, the witty screenplay and the emotional impact of the work as a whole. |

Omar Sherif was born Michel Dimitri Shalhoub in 1931 to a wealthy Alexandrian family of Christian Lebanese origin. He spent several years as a child in Zahle, and in Imprisoned Splendour recalls those happy years. Already a star in the Middle East from his many Egyptian films, Sharif was launched to international celebrity status after his role in Lawrence of Arabia in 1962, which earned him an Academy Award nomination and starred opposite Julie Christie in the classic bittersweet Dr Zhivago (1965), a role that won him a Golden Globe award and remains one of his best-known films. Sharif is well-known these days as a world class bridge player and writes a column for London's Observer newspaper. |
