Tram breaks through at Place Massena Tramway Nice Côte d’Azur Opens
First Tram breaks through a paper barrier at Place Massena amidst a shower of confetti.

The first two tramsets carried the dignataries who would deliver the inaugural addresses.

The remaining eight tramsets waited patiently behind the barrier to give the rest of us free rides for Saturday and Sunday.

Speakers included: Jacques Peyrat mayor of Nice and the man behind the whole thing; Christian Estroisi overseas secretary of state and president of the conseil general of the Alpes-Maritimes; Patrick Allemand 1st vice-president of the Region; (all three running for mayor of Nice) Louis Négre, mayor of Cagnes; Dominique Vian, Préfet of the Alpes-Maritimes; the First Councillor of the Principality of Monaco; officers of Alstom (manufactures of the trams) and Veola (operating partner of the tram).
Tram breaks through at Place Massena The rides began after a marvelous "Niçois Buffet". Seems like everyone in the immediate area wanted to experience the tram! Couldn`t believe the number of Nice residents who had never been to Nice-Nord or Nice Est!

The paper barrier that "la rame" broke through was a mural of the much earlier tram that ran in Nice until 1953.

So many wonderful things to tell:
The "trace of the tram": the 2 or so blocks each side of the tram that will surely be redeveloped.
"Lou Trambalan" a song sung by 150 voices accompanied by the Nice firemans band.
Myriam Dalmasso operator of the first tram.

Tram de Nice Line 2 on Promenade The new (2007) Nice Tramway is getting ready to expand to "Line 2". The city is trying to decide if the route will be up the popular and scenic "Promenade des Anglais" or up two or more "less scenic" streets. Alstom has sent a demo version of their newest (and more energy efficient) tram and some rapid reconstruction made a block-long visual of how it would look.
Impact of the Tramway on Nice

All along the trace of the tram, Nice will benefit from an urban face lift that carefully respects the character of each district. The arrival of the tram in Nice will make it possible to up-date the surrounding urban space to make it more functional and user-friendly. Thus, the tram will allow the better sharing of public space between cars, cyclists and pedestrians.
The use of the tramway will reduce the number of cars in the city center which will in turn prevent a growing problem of road traffic, pollution and noise. Businesses surrounding the Tramway will benefit from easy access for their employees and customers. We can see this already as businesses refer to their tram stop in advertisements. The same goes for property. District areas have been cleaned-up, improved and mostly pedestrianised boosting the value of property.
Nice as an ambitious goal of removing 30 percent of vehicle trips from the downtown area.
Other cities could learn a lesson from this completely integrated system, that provides the user with a safe, economical and pleasant mode of transport, linked to large, well thought out pedestrian areas for easy access to shopping and tourist facilities.
The pay off has already started.
More and more tourists are seeing Nice as a destination in itself (not just the airport for the rest of the Riviera) and property prices have been climbing because of the "tram effect". Also as many of the downtown areas along the route will become pedestrian friendly, better and more stylish shops and restaurants are opening along the route, in response to the influx of well-healed tourists and locals. We saw it on our first ride: new shops on previously distant places from center city. The tramline and associated infrastructure has transformed Nice in a way that will have a continued economic effect for many years to come.
Then the cost! Only 1.30 Euros. This is what good public transport is all about."
The tram has cost €370m and engaged more than 1,200 workers over the past six years. The result, city officials say, will be to reduce traffic flow, regenerate key areas and put previously inaccessible suburbs within striking distance of the Mediterranean. Planners have used the tramway as a catalyst create new pedestrian piazza areas, most notably at Place Massena, where cars will have only one lane across three acres, leaving residents and visitors free to roam from shop to restaurant to beach. Heading north along the tram line past the main station toward the football stadium, the shopping district of Jean Medecin will also be pedestrianised, as will Rue Jean Jaures, skirting the old town, along the eastern leg of the line running through Place Garibaldi and on. Costing just €1.30 and with a maximum capacity of 200 people per tram, the service will start at 5am and end at 1am; it will run once every four minutes during rush hour and every 15 minutes during quieter periods.

WOW! the fever is growing!
On November 27 2007 , North Carolina’s Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) launched revenue service on its first light-rail corridor, the LYNX Blue Line.
The 9.6-mile, 15-station line runs from Interstate 485 at South Boulevard to downtown Charlotte. On weekdays, trains will operate every seven-and-a-half minutes during peak periods and every 15 minutes during non-peak periods. On weekends, trains will run every 20 minutes and 15 minutes during peak and non-peak hours, respectively. CATS also has introduced 14 new bus routes and made changes to several existing routes so passengers can more easily connect to the light-rail line.
