Definition of SOCIAL MEDIA

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines as "forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)".

Investopedia defines as "Internet-based software and interfaces that allow individuals to interact with one another, exchanging details about their lives such as biographical data, professional information, personal photos and up-to-the-minute thoughts.Social media originated as strictly a personal tool that people used to interact with friends and family but were later adopted by businesses that wanted to take advantage of a popular new communication method to reach out to customers, for example, by informing them of sales and offering them special coupons."

Thirty other definitions from marketing expert Heidi Cohen

Definition of SOCIAL NETWORK

PC Magazine defines as "An association of people drawn together by family, work or hobby. The term was first coined by professor J. A. Barnes in the 1950s, who defined the size of a social network as a group of about 100 to 150 people. On the Web, social sites such as Facebook and Twitter have expanded the concept to include a company's customers, a celebrity's fans and a politician's constituents".

Definition of ENTERPRISE SOCIAL MEDIA

Search CIO defines as "Enterprise social media is a category of online communications channels dedicated to corporated-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration".

Enterprise social networking is an organization's use of social media, internally and externally, to connect individuals who share similar business interests or activities. Internally, social tools can help employees to access the knowledge and resources they need to work together effectively and solve business problems. Enterprise social networking includes the use of in-house intranet software as well as third-party social media platforms like Yammer and Socialcast to improve communication and collaboration between employees. Externally, public social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Google+ can help an organization stay close to their customers and conduct research to improve business processes and operations.

Definition of DIGITAL MEDIA

Business Dictionary defines as "Digitized content (text, graphics, audio, and video) that can be transmitted over internet or computer networks.

Definition of SOCIAL SUPPLY CHAIN

Social Business Advisor, Jacob Morgan defines as "Social supply chain management seeks to incorporate social data, network, and interactions into the supply chain".

George Ellis, a global supply chain executive at Tyco International defines as "the application of social media technology across the entire breadth of the typical supply chain, all the way from supplier's suppliers to customer's customers. It also includes the integration of social media technologies or social media-like collaboration technologies within organizations to connect and empower the people across the entire spectrum of the supply chain".

Definition of SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Before we run too far down the rosy social path, let's remember everything we do is under the SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT umbrella. Best definition we have found is:
the book “The New Supply Chain Agenda, : The 5 Steps That Drive Real Value” by Reuben E. Slone, J. Paul Dittmann, and John T. Mentzer defines as “The activity that manages the flow of information, money, and material across the extended enterprise, from supplier through the functional silos of the firm to customer”.

Definition of ENTERPRISE SOCIAL NETWORK

Denise Kitt in CRM Switch defines as “Most people are aware of public social networks: non-private social networks used to connect different types of people. Examples of public social networks include Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. What businesses may not know is that the social functionality of public social networks can be used within a private, secure corporate setting. These “company” networks are called enterprise social networks.”.

Definition of ENTERPRISE SOCIAL NETWORKING

Socialcast defines as “Enterprise Social Networking creates secure online communities in which employees, business partners, and even customers can post messages, such as a status update, a progress report, or a question. Fellow participants can then reply or add comments to these posts. Posts can include links or attachments. These “conversations” combine to form an Activity Stream or a feed for the organization. Activity Streams can be specific to groups, such as the “Project Blue” group, or the “Marketing Team” group, and can be either public or private. The result is a real-time, continual pulse of what’s happening now in a company. Over time, Activity Streams become a vital archive of institutional knowledge that can be filtered or searched by relevant topic or member”.

Definition of ENTERPRISE COLLABORATION SYSTEMS (ECS)

Techopedia defines as “An Enterprise Collaboration System (ECS) is an information system used to facilitate efficient sharing of documents and knowledge between teams and individuals in an enterprise. ECS tools include the Internet, groupware, various forms of software and hardware and internal and external networks. ECS functions optimally in a collaborative working environment (CWE)”.

Definition of ELECTRONIC MEDIA (EMedia)

Business Dictionary defines as “Broadcast or storage media that take advantage of electronic technology. They may include television, radio, Internet, fax, CD-ROMs, DVD, and any other medium that requires electricity or digital encoding of information. The term 'electronic media' is often used in contrast with print media”.

Definition of SOCIAL TECHNOLOGIES

Gartner defines as “Any technology that facilitates social interactions and is enabled by a communications capability, such as the Internet or a mobile device. Examples are social software (e.g., wikis, blogs, social networks) and communication capabilities (e.g., Web conferencing) that are targeted at and enable social interactions”.

Definition of SOCIAL ANALYTICS

All Things Analytics defines as “If we look at the academic definition of social analytics “the process of measuring, analyzing and interpreting the results of interactions and associations among people, concepts, and facts” and apply this more broadly to the business, then a couple of things happen. Firstly we start to be able to harvest actionable social insights from existing enterprise applications, secondly we create a bridge that allows us to marry legacy business solutions with the new generation of social business platform, and thirdly we significantly increase the ROI we can realize from our social investment”.

Definition of SOCIAL CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT (CRM)

Tech Target defines as “Social CRM is customer relationship management fostered by communication with customers through social networking sites, such as Twitter and Facebook”.

Social brings a new element into CRM because now instead of just dealing with data and information we are dealing with conversations and relationships. These conversations and relationships take place not just from company to consumer but also from consumer to consumer. Think of Twitter as a simple example. Let’s say you are a large brand on twitter such as Southwest Airlines. You are building relationships with your followers but you also have the ability to build relationships with and listen to (and engage) customers that are having conversations about you.

Definition of GOING SOCIAL

KPMG defines as “Participating in social media has become a business imperative and, regardless of industry group or ownership structure, social media is rapidly moving up the boardroom agenda. More than 70 percent of organizations operating around the world now active on social networks and there seems to be little doubt that social media is widely seen as a viable and effective business tool.Surprisingly, many of the more developed markets seem to be lagging behind their peers in the emerging markets, indicating significant room for expansion in the advanced economies. Emerging markets seem to be quickly finding that social networks offer yet another opportunity to leapfrog the competition in the developed markets."

Definition of CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE MANAGEMENT (CEM)

Strativity defines as “Customer Experience Management (CEM) is a business strategy that focuses and redefines the business from the customer view point. CEM assumes that products and services are no longer sufficient to satisfy the customer and elevate the value proposition to the level of an experience. At the core of the CEM strategy is an organizational experience that defines the value for both employees and customers. Through employees' experiences, CEM unleashes the best innovations and creates superior value and excellent customer experience. In addition, it promotes an equal relationship between customers and corporations and an ongoing dialogue that improves and strengthens the quality and length of relationships. Companies that have adapted CEM strategies have placed greater emphasis on their employees and customers as part of the experience creation and delivery."

Definition of CONTACT CENTER

Business Dictionary defines as “Customer service facility that houses all inbound and outbound communication channels of a firm (phone, voice-mail, fax, email, website, regular mail)."

Gartner expands to CONTACT CENTER SYSTEMS and defines as “a computer-based system that provides call and contact routing for high-volume telephony transactions, with specialist answering “agent” stations and a sophisticated real-time contact management system. The definition includes all contact center systems that provide inbound contact handling capabilities and automatic contact distribution, combined with a high degree of sophistication in terms of dynamic contact traffic management."

Definition of CONTACT CENTER PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT (CCPM)

DMG Consulting defines as “Both a process and an application, CCPM is a mission-critical tool for capturing and analyzing all aspects of a contact center or department’s performance, and for rapidly identifying when goals are not being met. CCPM solutions deliver information on a historical, near-real-time and real-time basis, giving managers actionable data and insights that can be applied to address issues and prevent a problem from continuing or escalating. "

Definition of MACHINE-TO-MACHINE (M2M)

Tech Target defines as “Machine-to-machine (M2M) is a broad label that can be used to describe any technology that enables automated wired or wireless communication between mechanical or electronic devices”.

M2M allows networked machines to exchange information and perform actions without the manual assistance of humans. M2M communication is often used for remote monitoring. In product restocking, for example, a vending machine can message the distributor when a particular item is running low. M2M communication is an important aspect of telemetry, warehouse management, remote control, robotics, traffic control, logistic services, supply chain management, fleet management and even telemedicine.

Check Out The Latest In Social Media

In the last several months, there have been many significant changes in Social Media. Shown below is a summary of these changes and the impact they are having on the whole Internet and all of our lives.

The onset of Social Media has altered the whole communications pattern. Used to be the company was in control of communications. Yes, an unhappy customer could write a letter or call an 800 number. But the manufacturer could keep a problem bottled up and fix it their own way. Now, a problem can come out of the closet in minutes and spread all over the Internet.

But crisis management is only part of the story. Add in customer service, marketing and market analysis. There is a definite ROI for businesses. We can point to specific campaigns run on social platforms such as the Orbitz Travel Ticket Giveaway. It used to be all about "engagement" with customers, now ROI is visible. You get as many page clicks on Social Media as you get from a Google ad .....and at no cost!

Social media is no longer just a platform for communication. It can be used very effectively in combination with sales channels, digital or physical, and be directly linked to revenues. An example is how Coca-Cola used Facebook to create flavors of their Vitamin Water.

Is Social Media Really Social?

Is Social Media all about true interaction between two parties or is it just “tapping keys”? Should the word "social" be changed in Social Media to either "Digital Media" or "Emedia."? We define Social Media as "Digital communication between multiple individuals or organizations in an effort to further the personal and professional endeavors of each,"

I saw a great article on Social Media written by Al Maag, Vice President of Avnet. In it, he talks about growing up and his belief that most of his friends who became successful achieved their success because of the social skills and the relationships they formed within their group. He and his friends are all convinced that they learned these social traits in their teens, and just by hanging out. He also says he was fortunate not having grown up with the electronic tools people have today. They had to interact with others and learn the value of street smarts. They had to use their relationships and interpersonal skills to help create their futures. They worked and played as a team, won and lost, and experienced life. They worked at being friendly and establishing friends. They learned how to socialize, negotiate, communicate, and read body language. Sizing someone up was an art as well.

Social Media and CRM

Social media make the customer more powerful than ever. Companies must re-learn how to listen and react. The customer is always right is one of the two ”commandments” of a super market chain in Connecticut. Their second commandment is “see rule number one”. Anyone who does not take this seriously will not do well on social networking platforms where customers have not only a louder voice, but also can be heard around the World in minutes.

Social Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is real time. It is not only complaints and questions, it is compliments and sales leads too. Over the last few years, we brought conventional CRM into the world of technology: alignment of help desk, marketing, customer service and business policies. We are able to attract new customers and satisfy current customers. Social CRM is just continuing what we do now, but adding in social platforms. Social CRM just forces everything out in the open. So all we really need to do is add social technologies to our tool bag.

Is EDI A Social Media?

If we define Social Media as "Digital communication between multiple individuals or organizations in an effort to further the personal and professional endeavors of each," then the answer is "Yes." But there's certainly more to the story.

EDI obviously leaves out one major component; the personal side of the relationship. However, as our lead story points out, it may be the personal side of the equation that is the determining factor when it comes to really making EDI successful. As much as we may concentrate on the technical aspects and the details of the data, the final part of the success comes because we connect to each other.

Should My Client Start A New EDI VAN?

There's been a lot of action in the EDI VAN industry recently. If you know what I am talking about, you are concerned. If you don't know, consider yourself lucky and go celebrate. Well, my client is in the former group and posed an interesting question to me. He is privately-held (and my non-disclosure agreement says I will be shot if I talk about him too much). He has a food buying group that is heavily dependent on EDI, plus a bunch of other things like community newspapers that he wants to be more heavily involved with EDI. He already owns a couple of computer-related companies, so his question “should we start our own VAN?” was not off the wall.

ec-bp.com The Forum for Supply Chain Integration

ec-bp was established in 2005 as the advocate for lowering the barriers to the adoption of EDI, and our email newsletter has been published every month since that time. Our focus has expanded beyond EDI to encompas the full gamut of supply chain practices and technologies. In addition, our readership has grown to become the largest of any similarly focused publication, and has expanded to include more than 90,000 professionals involved in nearly every aspect of the supply chain.

Today’s supply chain is more than simple transport of EDI documents. The complexity of maintaining compliance with trading partners, managing the ever increasing amount of data, and analyzing that data to drive constant improvement in processes and service take supply chain professionals far beyond the basics of mapping EDI documents.

Ten Unique Ideas, Facts and Uses for XML

We always hear that XML has all kinds of flexibility. Thought I would explore and see what unusual things have been done with it. Many Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) have been developed that software developers use to process XML data, and several schema systems exist to aid in the definition of XML-based languages. Hundreds of XML-based languages have been developed, including RSS ATOM SOAP and XHTML. XML-based formats have become the default for most office-productivity tools, including Open Office, Microsoft Office and Iwork (Apple).

How Business Analytics is Being Delivered In The EDI World

Business intelligence / analytics coupled with data aggregation are not new terms. They have depended directly on the business system (like SAP) hence indirectly on the EDI system. They go back before EDI: a lot of them were once called “Decision Support Systems”. I wanted to find one that did all this and was directly tied into an EDI system, but I didn't have one in mind. Then I “ran into” one in a “Webinar” sponsored by Loren Data.

EDI System Tune-up

Just like your car, your EDI system requires a periodic “tune up”. You need to step back and see if your system is giving you the “best mileage for your dollar”. Remember, things change over time and something that worked well last year might not now because of external changes in your business process or internal changes in the interfacing systems.

Drop-Ship - The Ultimate

Imagine the bicycle delivery person in the picture pedaling through a “pedestrian zone”. His first stop is a small T-Shirt store. He brings their package inside and gets a signature on his hand-held device. Next, he delivers a smaller package to a teenager in a nearby apartment. Again he gets a signature. You have just seen the tail end of the supply chain.

Choosing a Cloud Hosting Provider

Cloud computing is rapidly changing the way both IT and the business work. It is no longer a “should we” question, it is a “when are we” question. Companies are interested in outsourced (“public”) cloud offerings in order to reduce costs and increase business agility. Yes ,there are potential risks which must be addressed. Cloud computing conclusions must be joint between business and IT decision makers. Key players need to define business service requirements first and then decide how to balance the use of internal IT resources and external public offerings. This decision-making process must include the main players, which includes the director of Supply Chain Management.
