LET'S GET TOGETHER TO HELP
STRAY AND FERAL CATS:
WE NEED
CATS WITHOUT KITTENS

I have three stray males living in my house and two feral females who wintered on my patio (and just had six kittens). It is very nice for all the concerned groups to say: "pet owners, you should spay your cats". I'm just trying to do my little bit for these cats who would be long gone if I hadn't done something, but there has got to be a better way. Someone like me shouldn't have to shoulder the cost of spaying/neutering.

What can we (collectively) do to get society (the government?) interested in this problem?

A good case for doing more can be built around cost. Spaying and neutering is much more cost-effective that a shelter caring for an animal. According to a recent study,(Wenstrup, John, and Alexis Dowidchuk, "Pet Overpopulation: Data and Measurement Issues in Shelters," Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science, 2(4), 1999, 303-319) it costs some shelters an average of (US)$176 to capture, house, feed and eventually kill a homeless animal—a cost that ultimately comes out of all our pockets.

What could we all do to help?

The answer is sensitizing our municipalities

In Quebec, there are approximately 1.2 million domestic cats, but 1.6 million stray or feral cats.

Of pet owners, 15% have dogs and 85% have cats.

Cats are much easier to abandon than dogs.

Killing strays is not the answer. The stray cat population will still grow. The best answer is to spay or neuter the strays, then release back to their own area. Nature will then "balance" the population.

One of the BBF’s biggest deeds in France is its battle against the proliferation of “free” cats in our towns. To this end, we help associations and other benefactors by financing sterilization fees via “sterilization vouchers”.

This work was started several years ago and was intensified in 1996.

After years of persevering on everyone’s part, our campaigns were legalized on January 6th 1999. It enabled us to develop partnerships with municipalities.

In 2003 we interceded with city councils and we participated in the sterilization of 6 500 cats (male and female). The cost was 271 359,25 €.

All in all, the BBF made 35 432 stray cat sterilizations possible since 1996.

What About Alternatives to Spaying ???
How come civilized cities like Paris are able to use birth control drugs on pidgeons???

Wouldn't birth control drugs (or other humane measures) on stray cats work???

Let's put the "PREVENTION OF CRUELTY" back in the SPCA!!!
A real chance to solve the homeless cat problem -- humanely.
Michelle Meister-Weisbarth, a student at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, has developed a genetically engineered bacterium that can be used as an oral contraceptive to control the unwanted cat population.
From the United Kingdom: There are two commonly-used forms of medical contraception in cats; tablets and injections. Both are prescription medicines and their use should be discussed with your veterinary surgeon at a consultation which should be undertaken before six months of age. No cat contraceptive is 100% effective and should be seen as a short term action, not a long term solution.

I just finished reading about the feline birth control on the AZA Felid Tag web page, and you were right, using it can have too many side effects. Is there going to be anything safer available in the near future ?
Hopefully, yes. Dr. Linda Munson at U.C. Davis and others are compiling info.

Low Cost or Free Spay - Neuter Programs in the United States

Click above for programs that provide low cost or free spay/neutering, listed by state. Some programs work only with pets of people with low incomes. Some do not consider income but serve only pet cats -- or only feral (untame) cats. But other programs serve all kinds of dogs and cats. We believe the listing details below are correct at this writing, but contact the program to be sure.

A Free Spay and Neuter program is the only key solution to reduce the number of unwanted animals needlessly killed and born into a society that does not care. We should stop killing and help pass a Free Spay and Neuter program. By offering Free Spay and Neuter assistance to the general public this program can be achieved.

If you know about other low cost or free spay and neuter programs or if you have updates to these listings, please email us

The best time to separate a kitten from its mother is between seven and eight weeks of age.

If taken away too early, kittens may have to be bottle-fed by their new families and frequently behave badly due to premature departure from the nest. Here are some things to look out for with kittens who are orphaned too early: First, they tend to have oral fixations throughout their lives--they either suckle objects, such as blankets or their new parent (you, the pet owner) or themselves. Many cats will suck on their owner's fingers, hair or skin whenever given the chance. This may go on for their whole lives! Most owners seem not to mind, however. Cats who lick themselves can do so to the point of baldness, usually on their bellies or sides. Another possible result of early adoption is a kitten who is slow to learn or one who displays aggressive behavior. It may seem mean sometimes to take a kitten from its mother, but, believe it or not, the well-being of the queen often requires that her kittens be taken away from her. By the time seven weeks have gone by, the queen is pretty tired of nursing--after all, she's been satisfying the needs of many hungry kittens, who at this point have sharp teeth and claws. The mother needs a break from producing milk, which is best done by separating her from the kittens. To prevent her glands from becoming over-full and painful, it helps to impose a 24-hour fast, withholding both food and water. It sounds cruel, but it forces her body to reabsorb the milk in her mammary glands, thereby keeping her from having painful swelling and potential mastitis (mammary infection). You can also apply an ice pack to the swollen area to reduce pain and further milk production. Since the act of nursing stimulates the production of more milk, it is important to keep the kittens away for at least one week. She will keep producing milk as long as the kittens are still nursing.

The Story of Our Young Kittens
This is the story of the kittens born from the two feral females outside our home
The two feral cats had made a home in the cat carrier we had provided on our patio.
It was the end of Winter and still cold outside.
We looked inside with a flashlight and saw at least seven or eight kittens,
from two litters, born four days apart.
During the day, some of the kittens would get out and try to walk away.
It was not the best place to be as it was next to a busy parking lot.
One morning we looked out ans saw a kitten laying about 10 feet from the house.
It was dead.
We decided to bring the cat carrier inside and invite the mthers in too.
That didn't work.
The mothers tried to grab their kittens one at a time and bring them out.
One cat got so nervous that she smashed her kitten against the glass patio door.
It looked like we had to take over feeding.
Sleepless nights and what to feed.
Our losses
Clumping cat litter a problem.
They grow and become personalities.
Our male cats: varied reactions.
One becomes a friend and sort of a mother-figure
Another increases a pattern of not using litter box, becomes "wierd" and stays outside.
A third hisses, growls at kittens and spends most of his time outside.
